Facts about the Average Penis Size

As of 2019, the average human penis size is 5.16 inches.

Here is a more detailed breakdown of the average length and girth (circumference), worldwide, of an erect and flaccid penis shown in the table below:

Erect (hard) penis
Flaccid (soft) penis
Length 5.16 inches or 13.1 cm 3.61 inches or 9.2 cm
Girth (circumference)
4.69 inches or 11.9 cm 3.67 inches or 9.3 cm

These measurements are according to a study done by BJUI (British Journal of Urology International) and several other studies.[1][2]

Currently, the countries with the largest average penis size, 7.1”, are Congo and Sudan.

The country with the smallest average size, 3.7”, is South Korea.

The United States (and other Caucasian-population countries), on the other hand, have a modest average, which is around 5.1”.

Surprisingly, despite the typical racial slurs, the Japanese has a greater stat compared to Americans: 5.2” average.

The largest and longest erect human penis is 13.5” (34.3 cm) long, and it is Jonah Falcon who holds that record. In its flaccid state, it is 8” (20.3 cm.) long. His penis was so long that the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) has mistaken it for a bomb. If you want to visualize how long it is, imagine three iPhone 4s stacked upright.[3]

How to Measure a Penis Properly

Read our complete guide on how to measure your penis.

There are two ways to measure a penis:

  1. The first method is by measuring while it is erect.
  2. The second method is by stretching a flaccid penis and then measuring it.

The results of both approaches may have a few millimeters difference – but the erect measurement will generally be larger.

The most common method is the BPEL (Bone-Pressed Erect Length) measurement – read more here.

To know the length of a penis, get a ruler. Then, place one end of the ruler on your pelvic bone area — it is the hard and somewhat bony area above your penis. Be sure to put some pressure on the ruler until you feel your pelvic bone: This is to make sure that your pubic hair and layer of fat will not mess around with the measurement. Measure from the pelvic bone to the tip of your penis.

To get the girth, you can use a tape measure. Wrap the tape measure around the thickest part of your penis; it can be the shaft, base, or tip.

If you do not have a tape measure but you have a ruler, what you can do is get a strip of paper. Use that paper as a tape measure and check your penis’ girth. Mark the part of the paper that overlapped, and then measure the strip using the ruler.

Recommended tools: Girth Measurement Tape (amazon.com).

If penis sizes were as clear as bra sizes, the dating world would be very different.

Does Size Matter?

Fortunately, for those who are within or a bit below their national averages, there is no need to worry.

According to a research review journal from BJUI, women are more focused on a man’s looks and personality: penis size is not a priority.

Many men whose penis size is 5 inches or less begin to doubt their size. This is common but can lead to self-esteem issues and a feeling of insecurity. 5 inches is definitely average and nothing to be ashamed of.

Pumps and Extenders

Penis pumps and extenders are commonly used to increase the penis size. It is ideal to use both concurrently, along with manual penile exercises. They can work wonders if used correctly over a long period of time.

Length vs. Girth Gains

If ever you want to make your partner more satisfied with your penis, it is recommended that you focus on improving girth rather than length. According to two studies, almost 80% of women prefer penis with a larger girth than having a longer one.[4][5]

However, 67% of women who are with men with penis sizes below the global and national average wish that their partners have larger penises, according to a graduate study from UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) Department of Psychology.[6][7]

On the flip side, most of the female respondents in the study (85%) said that they were satisfied with their partner’s penis size.

women's preference for penis sizes chart

In the same study, men were asked to rate their penis size:

  • More than half of the respondents (66%) rated their penises as average.
  • A few (22%) rated their penises as large, with the remaining rating their penises as small.

Those who rated their penises as large tend to rate their appearance higher compared to other respondents, which might imply that penis size affects a man’s confidence in his looks.

Watch girls’ reactions when they see a huge penis outline in tight shorts:

Different Studies Tend to Have Different Results

In the previous section, it seems that BJUI studies implied that most women are not that worried about their partners’ penile size. However, many studies and polls have generated a different conclusion.

For example, according to a Mister Poll survey, 81% of more than a thousand female respondents would turn down a very attractive male with a small penis for an average-looking man with a bigger package.

In the same poll, 75% of the respondents believe that penis girth and length matter a lot. Also, 61% of them have confided that they have dumped or refused intercourse with males with penis sizes below their expectations.

The poll also had male respondents (also more than a thousand), and they were asked how they felt after reading the women’s responses regarding penis size. Here is the breakdown of that poll:

  • 44% are confident that their penis is good enough.
  • 19% are overly confident that their penis can satisfy most women.
  • 17% are not confident about their penis size.
  • 9% are not confident about their penis size, but they are confident that they can still satisfy women.
  • 8% are extremely confident with their penis size and performance.

Accuracy of Studies and Measurements

Despite being heavily studied, there is still a huge margin of error when measuring penis size, especially if the collection of data relies on letting the respondents perform the measurement.

Also, multiple factors can affect a penis’ erection: ambient temperature, mood, age, and self-esteem.

Correlation of Penis Size to Body Parts

It has been a common saying that you can predict a man’s penis length by just looking at his feet, ear, height, and even the nose.

However, according to a 2013 study, there is no connection to one’s physique and penis size.[8]

Nonetheless, a few other studies have noticed a pattern, correlation of buttocks size to penis size, but it is still inconclusive.

So many lies about the size of a penis. But I am being truthful about the following:

1. I am now 70 years of age and I measure 9 inches on top from pubic bone to tip of penis (correct measuring).
2. My starting size was 7 inches when I began my natural growth exercises.
3. Do not believe the misconceptions that the penis cannot expand or grow without penile surgery.
4. I notice that most penis growth websites forget a vital part of penis growth and that is the testicles.
5. Specific massages release testosterone in the testicles and they help with developing strong erections (even at 70).

Well earl, you don’t you try and see for yourself. The main thing is to get your penis erect and to use it regularly as that is what keeps your penis healthy and functioning. Not much point having a whopper you cannot use.

Listen friends, the role of the foreskin in sexual intercourse is all in your mind. And any man who does not use some kind of lubricant on their penis for sex is a moron whether you are hooded or have a one eyed turtle neck. You do know that the natural penile lubricant on uncut men is actually smegma.

@Roger – I can’t possibly believe that’s true! I’m a woman. I’ve been with a man with an average length just shy of 6 in & a man with a length of about 9 in. I much preferred the 9 in. No discomfort at all. In my personal experience, the longer penis length allows for more variation of sexual positions. Allows for more exploratory positioning, also allows for a more lengthened withdrawal and thrusting, which is hot af. I will also say that one factor not mentioned is penile girth. I’ve had an average penile length with above average girth, and above average penile length with average girth. The above average girth does exponentially increase satisfaction in terms of that ‘fullness’ factor that aids climaxing.

Have you had found having an 8 in penis has made sex difficult with more than one women, or has it just been your experience with one woman? I ask because maybe the problem is not your above average penis length, but with the woman herself? Conditions such as endometriosis can make sex painful for the woman, irrespective of the men’s penile length.

Yea that’s really true. And different women get off differently. I don’t know exactly how big mine is, I know its above average length, probably 6-7″ erect, but have a very large head. I just measured its 5.5″ soft. My advantage for answering this is that i’ve been with a lot of women, so for probably 90/100 its fine, no problems. occasionally if you’re with someone who’s used to a very large one you can tell they want more than you have even if they won’t say so. And for me my girth, occasionally maybe 3-5 out of 100 won’t let me put it in, and anal, nobody wants it from me cause the heads too big. Then for some they absolutely love it like its the perfect size. so like any other attribute, just remember there are billions of women out there and if the sex is bad and you can’t work it out, just find another partner.

You’re retarded. The chart of women preferences that you see on other sites is complete bullshit for so many obvious reasons. And then there’s the part where 11×7 is somehow still called enjoyable. The vast majority of women find that painful. Yes there’s such a thing as too big. On top of that, according to a study conducted in 2015, the preferred penis size by women is 6.4×5.0. If you look at the other chart, 6.4×5.0 barely hits enjoyable. This chart is more inline with the data from that study. How you could be so stupid is amazing to me.

I’m a scientist and always check the original. The graph is the accurate one. Someone altered it for unknown reasons. Websites for women such as Cosmopolitan and HuffPost ran the altered one. Only one out of a hundred men have 8+ inches length or a girth of 6+ inches. I’m stuck with both and would never make fun of the smaller 6 inch guys with 5 inch girth. They’ve got the better deal. I’m 68 and when a teenager it hurt something awful to put a condom over a 6.5 inch girth. Big guys received much less sex.

Would like an extra inch on x and y axle, but when I tell my girlfriend she says I am totally mad and will send me to a shrink.
Most important is that it is functional and you know what to do with it.
If you have a big dick, she might not enjoy it because there is a-hole attached to it.
Woman enjoy sex and get orgasms (most do not by penetration) because they trust you, not because someone sticks a huge salami in their vagina.

Vaginas prefer whole, fully functional, hygienic, smooth, moist, sensitive glans penises for maximum sexual pleasure. Rough, dry out, permanently exposed desensitized glans penises cause excessive vaginal friction and erosion leading to increased dyspareunia.

Don’t allow people to circumcise your children’s neurologically and physiologically functional exterior reproductive organ parts, teach your sons to practice good hygiene and respect for women instead. Then women will not want to practice brain traumatizing medicalized religious infant genital cutting organ theft rites on your sons as part of their feminine hygiene rituals.

I can’t believe this, I’m 9 inches +or- long depending on erection and 8 inches +or- depending girth. Yes measured by the rules by myself, then by my girl.

My mom used to embarrass me – she would ask my girlfriends “if I still have a huge penis”. She would tell them that when I was a baby, it was huge. That the doctor told her “he should grow into it and it should be average when he grows up”.

I have yet to be with a girl that hasn’t commented on it and have been told more than once that my girth was too much. I had problems when I was a kid. Being young I was too eager to get in there.

Then when I was 16, we got new neighbors. The husband worked out of town, and the wife was in her early 30s. She taught me to enjoy the foreplay and most importantly how to eat pussy. I have had no complaints or problems since. I have heard that most guys with big penises don’t know what they’re doing and that I act like a small guy. I owe it all to Jamie, wonder what she looks like now.

Most importantly is how you work it. Don’t put your whole Johnson in until she’s about to pop. Tease her by no putting it in all the way and, right when she’s ready to pop, put that last inch or two in and feel the 💦 start gushing.

The “Women’s Preference Chart” shows the ‘ideal’ size. Not the most common, most healthy, or the average. Also note that every woman is different – so it is impossible to create a universal chart with ideal sizes.

And yes – with pumping and exercises, your first inch of gains should be the easiest. You could achieve that within a few months.

      dave says June 26, 2018

That woman’s preference chart is aloud of rubbish. Women do not actively measure their sexual partners’ penises and would be based purely on estimations and their perception which is completely different from a man’s point of view. When women are looking at his penis, they would almost definitely overestimate from their perspective, i.e., the angle they see it from or to be cruder when it’s pounding their 3 and a half inch deep vagina or hitting the back of their throat.

Basically, that graph is absolutely bogus and has no scientific or factual standing. The only thing that its good for is making a large number of men feel more inadequate and insecure. Wish people would think before spreading misinformation.

The coloured map only shows length. 70 percent of size is girth. So the examination itself might be correct, but the map is displayed wrong. The length in the graphs is 2 cm longer than the actual visible length because they measure pressed to the bone. 6.5 is 5.7 or so.

It looks like you have the average girth of an erect penis (4.69 in.), as being smaller than that of the average flaccid girth at (4.96 in.). I highly doubt that given the amount of accuracy to the study as a whole, that this was simply a typographical mistake, however, I do find myself wondering why there is absolutely no mention of this fact whatsoever, anywhere within the entire study and its conclusion. It just seems to me that with such a high emphasis in regards to girth, the fact that the worldwide average girth of an erect penis being somehow smaller than that of the flaccid girth, would at least be worth mentioning. Or maybe it was just a typo…either way, just wanted to “throw that out there.” XD

I don’t really get bothered about what women think because if they want bigger, then it’s because they have an extremely deep and stretched vagina.

But I did wonder because when they say they have had 9 to 11 inches, it gets you thinking “are you big enough”. But then they will say it hurt, and they sucked in bed, didn’t know how to use it, so I don’t know.

I’m 7 1/2 when I’m totally at my best hard on. But now that I’m not turned on by this woman much anymore, I’m about 6 – I don’t understand how that is, but it is. But she still loves it and would actually want it smaller if she could choose.

How can I get girth naturally and keep it? I also wonder and compare my size to my girl’s past guys. I would like to just see them in person or picture, I’m not gay, but I just wonder if they really tell the truth. Or do they just tell you what you want to hear to make you feel better and more confident and not to ask again!!

I’ve only heard I was small by 2 women and they were girls that were with guys that were bigger for a long time. But they say that they never got off (or very rarely). And when they did it wasn’t great. I always hear that I’m the only one to get them off and it is great orgasms. So idk, I just would like feedback from some women or someone that knows about this more than myself!!!

So are you saying you’re not turned on by your girl anymore, so you’re now a 6 in size? So it shrunken? I know if a guy gains weight his penis gets smaller, but when he loses weight, it gets bigger…

      It doesn’t actually get smaller/bigger. The pubic fat-pad grows/shrinks.

Kelli, do your research first. It does not get smaller due to weight gain. It just looks smaller because there is more fatty tissue build up in the pubic bone area.

Yes I do agree. I feel the same … can any women tell the truth?
